remember Oregon Trail, the game?

keeps me full. keeps me focused. ha.

This morning I reached up for my favorite type of cold cereal, Frosted Mini Wheats. The Kellog's brand, NOT an off brand. I can do the off brands of just about ANY other cereal, just not my Mini Wheats. Just ask my family if I can cope with off brand Mini Wheats? Remember Christmas 2009, anyone?

(okay, I know you're dying to know what happened. We had Christmas with my family when they traveled to Austin (remember, at this point in the year I was GREAT with child and couldn't board an airplane?). Anyway, Aaron went in search of a grocery store nearby to pick up some breakfast essentials. He was only able to find a HEB Central Market (for you non-Texans, it is like a Whole Foods store. Everything healthy. You can just FEEL healthier walking around in their store). Before he left, I specifically told him that I needed Frosted Mini Wheats (the Kellog's part was implied). Well, being as pregnant as I was, food meant a lot to me (when has it NOT meant a lot to me?). So, I burst into tears as soon as he pulled the items out of the bag. Aaron felt horrible. They don't carry brands like Kellog's at Central Market. It was a sad morning, for everyone.)

ANYWAY, as I was pulling down my Kellog's Frosted Mini Wheats, I saw on the side of the box a little ad to download Nintendo DSi's OREGON TRAIL! what? Oregon Trail, the game? Why, I haven't thought of that game in years. Had you?

Remember this image?

or eventually they upgraded the game and had the newer version? Like this below...
(p.s. Aaron and I try to recreate the theme song with our voices from time to time. He is the bass (obviously) and I do the melody. It's quite lovely, really. Unfortunately, this clip cuts it too short.) Oh, and don't feel like you need to watch the whole video of this person playing the game. I mean, you can if you really have NOTHING BETTER TO DO...

Remember how we got to play that in Computer Lab in Elementary school? Remember how all week you'd look forward to playing that game? Remember how dysentery killed most of the members of your group? Or those blasted snake bites? Or how you would go hunting and only be able to carry 100 pounds back to your wagon?

Ahhh... the memories came flooding back.

Did you know that my dad gave me this game as a Christmas gift in 5th grade and it made me so happy? Maybe one of the best gifts ever. I could now, finally, travel the trail in the comfort of my own home. Amazing.

Anyway, I thought it was cool that they are spreading the love to the future generations of time. Tell me that I wasn't the only one who LIVED for that game?

Oh my goodness, I used to play that for hours. I loved hunting! By the way, we just moved to Austin, and my sister-in-law lives in San Antonio. We are down there a lot, so I would love to see you guys some time!

I love Oregon trail, except it would always crush my little third grade heart when one of my family would die from snake bites. I can't do "off brands" for cinnamon toast crunch, somehow I can always tell the difference, even in a blind taste test so I can empathize with you on that one.

I loved that game! I also remembering getting dysentery along the way a dying and asking my 3rd grade teacher, "What dysentery?" Then I remember being embarrassed when he answered, you can't talk about such things with a boy teacher!

Memories!

Loved Oregon Trail! I rocked at shooting buffalo ... I used to name all my trail mates after boys I was crushing on and then be really sad when they died from snake bites and exhaustion.
