no joke. it's true.

ok. believe it or not, we have some news.

we're having a boy

can you believe it???

First things first. A little background information, if you please.
We get a call from my OB/gyn around 7:30 p.m. on our answering machine last Thursday night. She says a little something like this, "Hi Melissa. Hon, I need to talk to you about your lab results from your blood test. Give me a call back when you get this."

uhhhh, what?

Mr. Even Stevens over here, aka Aaron, never gets worked about many things, but since our darling nephew's diagnosis with Cystic Fibrosis, that has changed. Aaron was pretty worried. And, by default, I was pretty worried.

So, we stewed and wondered what could it be? Either something with me or this baby.

Friday morning I call the office as soon as they opened and was able to talk to a nurse. I happened to push "record" on my cell phone so I could get EXACTLY what she told me down (I have a very forgetful memory). My Quad-test was showing that there was a high risk that this baby could have Down Syndrome. She said, and I quote (remember, because I RECORDED this part), "It's only 80% accurate, if that..." So, they wanted me to get into a specialist's office the next week to have a very detailed ultrasound and, then if I wanted, I could get an amniocentesis.

When I heard that 80% part, I started to worry a bit. When the weatherman says, "there is a 50% chance of rain"---you have a pretty good reason to take your umbrella.

So, fast forward to Monday. I was able to get an appt. yesterday and luckily, Aaron was able to come to the appointment with me. Thank you, Kajsa for watching Matilda for 4+ hours!! Who knew that we'd be talking to a genetic counselor too?

Anyway, all in all, it was a good experience. We took a few more tests and then she told me that I had the same risk as a 35 year old woman of having a Down Syndrome baby. Weird. Especially since I am 25 (today!).

So, they did the ultrasound. We loved our technician. She was great and totally funny. Everything was measuring "normal" and the best part was that we got to see the little guy. They kept commenting on how crazy he is. Kept movin' and groovin'---it was then that I knew---this kid was mine. He's a dancer. ;)

So, the lady said things were looking good. There is still a risk that he could have Down Syndrome, but as far as they could tell, things were looking "normal". And, everything just seems more REAL now that we could see him and feel him wiggling around. Pretty amazing.

Anyway, that's the happs. So, no joke. It's true. The lady said she was 100% sure he was a boy. hA! So, let's start thinking of boy names and putting away all of Tillie's pink! :)

LOl look at you guys! Having a boy?! I think it's the trend these days.
And I wouldn't worry about the baby. Whatever happens, happens for a reason. But I pray that he's a healthy happy Wood :)

How fun to have a boy! They are the best! I know that you are probably worrying about the ds thing. It's hard not to know for sure. But my little niece has DS and it has been the biggest miracle. Don't worry too much! :)

Congratulations!!

It's always a little scary when doctors mention the possibility of abnormality, even though ultimately it doesn't matter. When I was pregnant I was very low risk and the doctor still encouraged me to get an amniocentesis. I opted out.

What would an amnio do? Absolutely nothing. Seriously, they're only useful if you're considering abortion. Which is terrible.

A woman my mother's group in Menlo Park got the amniocentesis done, and the doctor accidentally ruptured the amniotic sack and she was leaking amniotic fluid. The baby was born at 24 weeks and it took her baby over a year to catch up to where she would have been.

Sorry to go on and on, I guess I have a strong opinion that getting amniocentesis is only good for worrying and inducing high-risk labor.

Congratulations again. I'm so excited for you!

Congratulations! It will be so fun to have one of each right. We'll keep baby Wood in our prayers to come out healthy as can be, good thing he's coming to such fantastic parents -- I bet he's been jazzed about that in Heaven for ages, probably thats why he's dancing so much in the belly....its called a celebration dance.
